Day to Day

A typical day in my internship can be a bit umm what the word is boring. Yes I am learning a lot but sometimes send out countless emails making tons of phone calls just gets old quick. I know, I know I should get use to this considering I want to work in the university setting doing something very similar. But there are also many days where I get to interact with students that are already here and ask them what they want to see what they like and think. Get their opinions on things I am trying to put together and to me that makes all the long days with countless emails and phone calls all worth it. The other fun part my day to day life in my internship is getting to meet with different directors and staff of the college. For instance the one person I got to meet most with for the fall welcome events I was planning was the director of marketing and communications for the entire college. I really like meeting with people and having an interactive job, rather than sitting in an office by myself and trying to communicate with people via email. Something about in person is so much better. Well at least to me!

  1. Tammie,

I completely agree with your feelings. Some people would prefer to sit behind a desk and respond to calls/emails all day but that definitely is not the future I want to have in the working world. I have found that I would rather talk to people in person rather that respond to them in emails, especially when they are working right down the hall from me. Unfortunately, with the pace of the world around us, it doesn't seem like that is the most effective way to get things done anymore. Technology makes everything move quicker, but as a result, I feel like it hinders the personal touch of it all.

  2. Hi Tammie,
I totally understand what you mean when you say boring, doing something you want to do. I am totally the behind the desk person and love working on spreadsheets and doing admin. At my internship, we go through busy spells and slow spells. The busy times are great and I'm busy and learning a ton. When It's slow I spend more time than I would like bored. That being said, I do learn unexpected things while trying to occupy down time. For example, I organized all the books in other languages and had to figure out what they were and what language they are in. Good luck!

  3. Hi Tammie,

I definitely share your opinion on desk jobs and how boring they can be. I also do much better and remain more motivated when my job is interactive. While I don't like working directly with customers, I do love working with stakeholders. Unfortunately, I find that most internships consist of menial tasks. It's great that you get to interact with students!
